This Is It: $100 Million at the Box Office and Rave 140 Character Reviews

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

king-of-popWe had a feeling that the Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It” would do pretty well at the box office, thanks to strong online ticket sales in advance of the film’s release. When the final box office numbers were tallied up, “This Is It” grossed $101 millon in worldwide ticket sales its first five days in release.

That figure included $32.5 million in domestic ticket numbers and the film was #1 at the local and worldwide box office. Although Sony was reporting high customer-satisfaction scores, we wanted to see what social media users thought about the film. Our friends at Crimson Hexagon did some Twitter sentiment analysis for tweets about the film.

The Analysis

Crimson Hexagon analyzed 15,000 tweets from between 10/28/2009 and 11/01/2009. This graph shows the breakdown:

thisisit-sentiments

The vast majority of tweets were either responding positively to the film or were about users who wanted to see the film. Eleven percent of tweets were looking for feedback from other users and a scant 3% didn’t like the film.

Looking at the trend graph, you can see that the number of “want to see it” tweets declined after opening day, whereas “I loved it” tweets increased. In short, it looks like both Twitter and the box office pegged “This Is It” as a big winner this weekend.

Did you see “This Is It” in theaters? What did you think of the film? Let us know!

100+ Clean, Simple and Minimalist Website Designs

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Minimalism has been a popular website design style for years. It has so many benefits; minimalist sites load faster, take fewer server resources, and are often faster to develop than more graphically complicated designs. Plus, they give a professional, clean impression to visitors.

clean minimalist web design

Black and White Photography: 100 Pieces of Exquisite Portrait

Monday, October 12th, 2009

A good portrait reveals something about its subject beyond the immediate appearance of the photograph. It includes layers of meaning and depth that portray the person as a whole, not just the superficial initial impression. Great portraits give us an idea of who the person really is, beyond what they’re trying to outwardly depict.

Black and White Portraits

Portraits done in black and white add an additional layer of complexity to their subject. The choice to appear void of color says something about the person, though what it says varies greatly between people. Below are 100 stunning black and white portraits to give you inspiration in your designs. The range of subjects and what their portraits say about them run across the entire spectrum of the human experience, and you’re sure to find something that resonates.

100+ Useful Bookmarklets For Better Productivity | Ultimate List

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

In a nutshell, bookmarklets are small little applications you can place as browser’s bookmark bar and they each perform a specific function, depending on what they are coded for. Bookmarklets are usually written in Javascript and they are extremely easy to install/remove. Bookmarklets work in most common used browsers like Firefox, Opera and Safari but probably lesser support in Internet Explorer.

In this article, we’ll show you some of the most useful bookmarklets for designers, developers or even if you are a net surfer, they might just come in handy. Installing a bookmarklet is simple – all you need to do is drag them to your bookmark toolbar, that’s all.

Why bookmarklet are cool?

They are efficient! We figured you might compare it with add-ons and browser plug-ins. Here are some advantages of bookmarklets over plug-ins we can quickly come out with:

  • Hassle-less installation – Installing a bookmarklet is simple. All you need to do is drag it up to the bookmark toolbar. To remove them, just right click on it and hit delete.
  • Light – If you’ve installed more than 15 add-ons in your Firefox, you’ll probably find it slower to start. Bookmarklets are just couple of lines of Javascript codes. You can have 50 and Firefox doesn’t even lag a bit.
  • No updates – Most plugins require update especially when there is a new version of the browser. Boomarklet on the other hand, are less likely to require an update.
  • Cross Browser compatibility – Bookmarklets are written with Javascripts, they work in most browsers.
